Stephen Farry calls for ‘gold standard’ apprenticeships

Calling for apprenticeship review

Northern Ireland Employment Minister Stephen Farry has called for a review of apprenticeships and youth training to make the system “gold standard”. He also aims to make the apprenticeship pathway equal to its academic counterpart.

Farry said: “I want to ensure that they support the growth and re-balancing of the local economy and meet the specific needs of business for a highly-skilled workforce. I want the review to examine how the apprenticeship pathway to a career can be seen as equal, or better, to the academic route.”

With regards to youth training, the minister wants “to ensure that flexible and appropriate provision is available for all our young people; regardless of their starting point”.

The minister is eager for Northern Ireland to learn from the success of German and Swiss apprenticeship systems.
