In a recent article for This is Bristol, Steve Webb, MP for Thornbury and Yate, addressed the rising popularity of apprenticeships, and called for employers in the area to support the schemes by hiring and training up young people.
Webb asks employers to disregard the old definition of apprenticeships, where young people often trained in practical outside jobs such as construction, and update their ideas of the schemes, which now see apprentices working in accountancy firms, veterinary clinics, and an increasing number of office-based jobs.
“The vast majority of employers who take on an apprentice find that it is a good way to train someone in the skills needed for their business, as well as giving young people a route into the world of work which helps them to go on developing their skills.” Webb concluded.
