A UK-wide travel company is set to expand its Scottish operations by taking on 75 modern apprentices this year.

Online travel agency Barrhead Travel will launch its largest ever modern apprenticeship recruitment drive in its 2016 intake – its average annual apprentice sign-up is said to be 50.

This will take its UK workforce to more than 950, with the new recruits helping to support a growth drive for the company, which also has 61 stores nationwide.

A top-flight service

A spokesman for Barrhead Travel told The Herald Scotland: “Increased customer demand has led to us moving to larger premises. With this, there has been natural need for more consultants to service customer demand.

“Also, as part of our professional development strategy for staff, our current MAs are continually moving up the ranks and into sales consultant [roles], marketing, IT, [and] accounts.

“We have also had a real focus this year on working with the education sector, engaging with many schools and colleges. This has ranged from careers fairs [to] presenting to pupils and work experience opportunities.”

Chief executive Sharon Munro added that many young people had gone on to senior positions in the company, having started their travel industry careers with modern apprenticeships at Barrhead.
