Apprentices starting out at Virgin Media are to be given the chance to do work experience at the company before they join the scheme full time.
The work experience, which is unpaid but covers expenses, aims to help apprentices gain a better understanding of what the working environment is like and what is expected of them from the role.
Head of apprenticeships at Virgin Media, Chris Starling, said: “With the guys coming through the scheme this year, where possible, we have encouraged them to try and do a day’s work experience. It’s a two-way thing. For us it enables them to work in that environment and see whether they find it engaging and exciting, and for them [they can] say ‘this isn’t for me’. It’s much better to make that decision as part of the recruitment process than when we’ve got them on a programme.”
