Leadership through Sport, a charity aiming to boost potential among young people with an interest in business and sport, has launched a programme for fifteen apprentices where their accountancy apprenticeship will be accompanied by mentoring sports.

As part of this new scheme, the apprentices work three days a week in a finance role, learning on the job. One day a week is spent studying for the AAT Accounting Qualification at college, and one day is spent mentoring primary school children.

Apprentice Haroon Ali says: “I am currently working at ICAP, the world’s leading inter-dealer brokers. I am based in the financial systems department, which is where we improve computer systems used by the company. Understanding the principles of accounting is vital, as this is how these systems operate. At the same time, I am currently studying for my Level 3 AAT Accounting Qualification. I have already achieved my Level 2. The AAT has been very beneficial because I can use what I’ve learnt at college in the workplace.”
