A new study carried out by Nestlé UK & Ireland has found that not enough is being done to encourage young people into STEM related careers, despite enthusiasm around the subjects remaining high.

The government is awarding the right to set future apprenticeship standards for the recruitment industry to a group of companies brought together by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Ahead of schedule by 18 months, the programme set up by the welsh government has smashed its target of creating 16,000 jobs opportunities by March 2016.

Grant Thornton director Simon Littlewood said: “We are delighted to be leading on the evolution of the programme to help keep apprenticeships responsive to employers’ needs and providing apprentices with a great grounding in business administration and management, helping them to build a career.”

Apprentice star Karren Brady launched the report, ‘Improving Employability in the UK’, which calls on the government to make three policy changes in order to achieve lasting improvement in the quality of employability education and work experience available to young people.
