Office design studio hires first apprentice

An architecture and office design practice has become the latest professional services firm to take the plunge and hire an apprentice. Area Sq has offices in London and Egham, and says that the decision to hire Ryan Porter demonstrates the success of its internship programme with the appointment of its first ever intern as a permanent member of staff. Following a successful internship journey, Area Sq has offered Porter a full-time role as junior designer in the regions team.

Porter’s journey to his apprenticeship comes after finishing his first year of an Interior Architecture and Design degree at Nottingham Trent University. Following that he joined Area Sq in 2014 on the company’s placement student scheme at the Egham design studio. Fourfront Group, Area Sq’s parent company, sponsored Porter throughout his final year of academic studies and gave additional support towards his final year project.

‘Developing valuable skills and experience’

James Geekie, design director for Area Sq, who worked closely with Porter throughout his placement, said: “At Fourfront we believe in training and developing our staff to be the best they can be and it’s no different for our interns. Ryan was and is a great addition to the team and continuously proved himself – it’s great that he’s now a permanent member of Area Sq.”

Clive Lucking, CEO of Fourfront said: “Internships offer a fantastic opportunity for students to work in market-leading organisations, enabling them to develop valuable skills and experience, thus setting them up for a career in their chosen field. Our business is solely built through our people – and our interns are no exception. They are a great asset to the Group and play a huge role in our continued growth.”
