Promising 16 go 19-year-olds will go head to head against career-minded peers in the finals of the School Leavers’ Challenge.

Run by TARGETcareers in partnership with BT, the national contest recognises drive and ambition in youngsters, who are competing in a series of regional heats in a range of strength and aptitude-based tests and challenges.

Ready for work?

Students entering the competition must complete a two-step assessment – the Work Readiness Assessment and the Apprentice Situational Strengths Test – which will rank them on a regional leader board.

They will also get feedback on how ready they are for the workplace, as well as suggestions for how they can continue to develop strengths.

The final, taking place on 14 March at London’s BT Tower, will pitch the top 10 students from each heat in group exercises, giving them the chance to network with employers and receive careers advice.

Plenty of opportunity

Laura Haynes, BT head of talent programme recruitment, said: “Every year we recruit hundreds of graduates, interns and apprentices across our diverse business areas and locations.

“The school leaver’s market is extremely exciting right now; we’re pleased to see there is such a wealth of choice and opportunity available after finishing school or college.

“We’re proud to headline sponsor this competition as we firmly believe in supporting individuals to realise their potential and pursue a career they will love.”

Path to a career

Kirsty Drummond, TARGETjobs events account director, added: “We’re delighted to be supported by BT and the many other apprenticeship employers that recognise the huge potential for school leavers who have the right work ethic and drive.

“There are now so many excellent professional career paths on offer to school leavers; we’re pleased to be able to showcase some of these to students and to help them make informed choices about their futures careers.”

Entries to the regional heats close on Friday 26 February 2016. The overall winner will get a day’s experience at BT’s Global Research & Development Headquarters.
