Digital marketing apprentice brings ‘integral’ skills to manufacturer

A Manchester firm is making the foray into the digital world, with the help of a tech-savvy apprentice.

Nikita Briggs, 18, has embarked on a year-long social media and digital marketing course at The Juice Academy, with on-the-job training at polythene manufacturer and packaging supplier Duo UK.

This is a landmark in the 25-year history of the company, which in the past has only taken on manufacturing and engineering apprentices.

Speaking to The Manufacturer, Nikita said: “Going to university seemed like a very obvious choice after school, but it didn’t fill me with excitement and passion. I wanted to get into the world of work, to start from the bottom and work my way up without a massive debt to pay back after graduation.

“I also love the idea of working in the manufacturing industry and have been incredibly inspired by everybody I’ve met who works in this field – there is an abundance of opportunity for women in particular who are ambitious and driven.”

Zoe Brimelow, brand director at Duo UK, added: “We’ve been a long-time supporter of apprenticeships, getting people in straight from school, teaching them about the industry, showing them a clear career progression, and giving them lifelong skills in a technical industry.

“Digital is an area we’re keen to invest in because we’re always trying to challenge the often outdated perception of what the manufacturing industry is like. Digital technology is integral to how we run our business now and in the future.”
