A new video from Verizon which aims to challenge the stereotype that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects are just for boys has gone viral.
In the video, a girl’s passion for science is stifled by her parents saying things like, “Don’t get your dress dirty” and “Who’s my pretty girl?”
Although it is a campaign from across the pond, it has all the relevance in the UK, as recent figures found that only 49% of girls consider STEM careers, compared to 64% of boys. Reasons behind this included lack of female role models, biased careers advice towards non-STEM subjects and gender stereotyping from a young age.
