Unpaid internships should be banned, says Tory MP

Conservative MP Alec Shelbrooke is moving forward in his quest to stop unpaid internships.

On 13th May he introduced a Ten Minute Rule Motion to the House of Commons calling for the prohibition of unpaid internships. Under his plans, employers will have to pay interns at least the National Minimum Wage after four weeks of work.

A vast majority of MPs voted in favour of banning the employment arrangements, voting 181 to 19 to take the motion forward.

The move comes after a YouGov poll found that 43% of 18 to 24 year olds believe unpaid internships act as a major barrier to getting a job.
