Mole Valley falling behind with number of apprenticeship starts

Figures released by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills have highlighted that Mole Valley is falling behind when it comes to hiring apprentices. The district was in the bottom ten in the UK, with just 360 apprentices being employed in local businesses.

Andy Bircher, corporate head of service at Mole Valley District Council, said: “The council is committed to supporting its business partners and businesses throughout the district to help strengthen the local economy. One such method open to Mole Valley businesses, and indeed the council, is to employ apprentices for additional support. I think it is important to put the 2011-12 apprentice figures for the district into perspective.

“Mole Valley is a small rural district which, despite supporting a strong business community, has a relatively small number and size of business when compared to other areas nationally and in Surrey.

“This fact is reflected in the relatively low uptake in apprenticeships which, it should be stressed, is the decision of the individual business whether to take that step or not.”
