Addressing the forgotten fifty percent

In a recent interview for The Independent on Sunday, Shadow Education Secretary Stephen Twigg spoke to Jane Merrick about addressing the forgotten fifty perfect of our young people who decide not to go to university.

He said that a network of “national colleges of excellence” would be created under Labour government which would focus on single subjects such as financial services or software programming.

He said that these colleges would gain international recognition and will make young people national leaders in their field.

Mr Twigg said: “We have got to make sure that the sorts of qualifications that young people are studying for are genuinely aligned with the jobs of today, let alone the jobs of tomorrow.”
