Tips to help you with the interview process

If you are in the process of interviewing apprentices, it can be difficult to know what to look for. This might be their first job directly from school and so it is hard to imagine how they will fit in the workplace. Look for the following qualities to ensure you are hiring the person best for the role:

It is important that apprentices:

  1. Have a passion for the sector. It is important that your apprentice wishes to follow a career in the sector, as it will drive them to work hard and achieve more. For example, if the role is for a publishing apprenticeship, the person should have a keen interest in reading books.
  2. Have excellent people skills. The apprentice should be articulate and able to talk about their skills and experiences during the interview. Of course they will be nervous, but ensure they come across well as they will be representing your business.
  3. Are dedicated to learning. Apprenticeships aren’t easy; the apprentice will have to study alongside working for your business. Are they up to the challenge? Look at previous academic qualifications and how they got on at school or college.
