A recent survey from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) asked employers in Scotland about the modern apprenticeship programme. With the unemployment rate in Scotland at 17%, modern apprenticeships have been hailed as the solution.

Nearly all of the employers surveyed found that young people with a modern apprenticeship were more capable at doing their job and 92% reported that their apprentice’s ability to work with others was greatly improved. Two-thirds noted an increase in productivity and many said service or product quality and staff morale had improved as a result of offering apprenticeships.

Youth employment minister, Angela Constance, spoke at a conference on apprenticeships and training in Edinburgh last month. She said that employing apprentices is “not only the right thing to do, but also the smart thing to do. They have skills, they are not set in their ways, they are willing to learn and, of course, they are very loyal.”
