Apprenticeships will be “firmly in hands of employers”

Responding to the Richard Review

Nick Clegg has revealed that employers will be given increased control over apprenticeship schemes in response to Doug Richard’s review on apprenticeships. They will be able to work alongside training providers to create their own schemes to best suit their business. Following on from our article last week, ‘Richard Review approval gives employers increased power,’ we have listed the Government’s plans for the future of apprenticeships.

These include:

  • Apprentices studying a level 2 qualification from August 2014
  • A final holistic test will be given upon completion of the apprenticeship
  • Apprenticeships should be outcome focused
  • Training of existing staff should be separate
  • Apprenticeships should be aimed at a skilled job
  • Employers setting standards for every apprenticeship
