David McNerney, HR director at nuclear waste management company, Sellafield Ltd, has spoken out about how employers have a responsibility to get school leavers and young people into employment. On Tuesday 15th January, McNerney gave a speech at the Westminster Employment Forum Keynote Seminar, where he discussed the ways in which schools are preparing young people for work through careers advice and guidance.

He said: “At the moment the current system is failing to engage with the key stakeholders in business. Young people are not getting what they need in terms of competencies, skills and attitudes, which will make them ready for the world of work. Employers have an absolute duty to help young people get a worthwhile career and it’s absolutely critical we get it right.”

Jenny Rudge, chief executive of Careers South West, also spoke at the event. She said that greater steps need to be taken to tackle youth unemployment. She said: “We’ve got to move further ahead, design a service that does things differently and meets the needs of employers.”
